International Teachers' Day 2005

Ashlea and Janae cut the cake with John LockhartJanae Windsor and Ashlea Tucker are Year 9 students who spoke on International Teachers' Day on 28 October.

Read their speeches to sense our pride.

Janae Windsor says...

When you look up the word "teach" in the dictionary, it means

  • to educate, to give instructions or lessons
  • to cause to learn, and to understand
  • to inspire, to help and guide someone
  • to develop academically, socially and emotionally
  • to aid someone in self-improvement.

If the students at Chancellor State College were asked to add their meaning to what a teacher is, this is what it would say.

They build peace and strength in our hearts. They make a small step forward feel like the biggest achievement in your life. They make us feel safe. They set high standards. They prepare us for the future. They make our world at school feel normal. They help fix our conflicts. They show us other ways of seeing the world. The laugh and cry with us.

We would like to say thank you. The teachers at Chancellor sate College are the heart of our school.

Ashlea Tucker says ...

The meaning of teacher is a person who teaches or instructs in a given area. But the teachers of Chancellor State College go above and beyond that meaning. Not only do you come to school very day ready and willing to educate us on things outside your expertise, you provide opportunities for students to excel in and out of school by enhancing our learning opportunities. You stand as role models not only for myself, but for the students of Chancellor, by teaching us that hard work and persistence can accomplish anything.

Being a teacher at Chancellor often requires you to step out of your comfort zone and try new things. Being here today means that every single one of you accepts that challenge and is willing to be a part of making this school one of the best. You strive to accomplish very goal in front of you, and you prove that as a team every one really does achieve more and to a high standard. By doing this, you set a great example for students to learn and accomplish anything they want to do.

The amount of extra-curricular activities at Chancellor over the last two years has been extraordinary, and we have you as the teachers to thank for that. You constantly go out of your way to provide the students with new and exciting ways to learn. So far you have been able to conduct two overseas trips, numerous sports carnivals, maths tutorials, interschool competitions, rock band, choir, lunch time activities, that's just to name a few. You have given so many students opportunities to excel and try new things. I and many others have gone beyond what we thought we could accomplish thanks to your commitment and hard work.

So today on behalf of the student body, I would like to recognise, appreciate and most of all thank you for all the hard work that you do. You have been a major role in making Chancellor College what it is  today and we want you to know that your great work doesn't go unrecognised. you truly are a part of making Chancellor the best it can be. Thank you.
