Explanation of Curriculum Framework and Design

Units of Excellence are evolving as we work through our third group of Year 8 classes.
Personal World - How do I succeed in business?     Revised in 2006

In studying this unit students begin an understanding of small business operations.  Students are encouraged to become enterprising citizens through understanding how to work together to create a product for a specific target audience.  The unit involves a design, make and appraise element, helping students understand how they can produce items that can be value-added to become successful entrepreneurs.  The unit involves students as risk-takers, communicators, team players and system creators.  Students begin an understanding of how they can join the enterprising world.

Key Assessment Task:

Follow a process that will lead to developing, marketing and launching a new product in the marketplace.

Natural World - How can we create a sustainable future?    Revised in 2006

In this unit students investigate key sources of energy used by mankind, explore sustainable uses of the earth’s renewable and non-renewable energy sources and investigate a renewable energy source.  Through this study students will appreciate that the earth’s resources are delicate and finite.  The unit encourages students to develop skills of investigation, teamwork, persuasive writing, oral communication and artistic expression.  Students are encouraged to take stewardship over their future and their own uses of the earth’s resources and seek practical outlets to preserve the Earth’s eco-balance including recycling and alternative energy sources.

Key Assessment Tasks:

  • Write a persuasive letter to an influential member of the community seeking their support in promoting sustainable practices.

  • Design a hands-on “lesson” of between 20-40 minutes on either sustainable or non-sustainable uses of energy.

  • Use the visual arts elements of line, shape, colour and texture to create a personal artistic statement that expresses your perception of our society’s attitude to recycling and reusing the earth’s resources.

United World - How do our Pacific Island neighbours live in a changing world?

Students explore the people and environment of the South Pacific Islands. They will identify the Island’s geographic features, and the unique culture of the Islands’ peoples.  The unit encourages the development of cultural understanding, allowing students insight into the way different cultures live and the cultural beliefs and practices that sustain a way of life with long traditions and a proud heritage.  In studying the unit students investigate the effects of colonisation on the peoples of the Pacific Islands and the way that the Islands’ people are adapting to a rapidly changing world.  Within the unit, the difficulties and pressures that interaction with the outside world brings will be explored.  The unit involves students as researchers, historians, team workers, empathisers, listeners and speakers as they explore the fascinating life of people in the Pacific Islands.

Key Assessment Tasks:

  • Research one island nation and write a research report on the island, explaining its geography, culture and environment.
  • Develop a persuasive oral presentation to convince tourists of the appeal of your island nation.

  • Include an PowerPoint presentation and a brochure highlighting the island's attractions.

Amazing World - How do we move around?

Students are encouraged to begin unravelling the secrets of our awesome physical universe.  During the course students explore and experiment with some of Newton’s Laws, investigate pushes, pulls and collisions, compare balanced and unbalanced forces and uncover secrets of space flight.  Students are involved as storyboard and scriptwriters as they work towards the creation of an animated film, focused on explaining the mysterious world of space travel.  During the unit, students are also involved as investigators and creators of a CD-Rom of information regarding the physical sciences.  An exam aims to test students’ broad knowledge of scientific concepts covered during the term.  The unit involves students as scientists, filmmakers, researchers, team players and communicators as they seek to unlock the secrets of how we access space by using our knowledge of the physical universe.

Key Assessment Tasks:

  • Write a script and storyboard in groups, for a short film dealing with the study of force and motion.
