Personal World - How do I
succeed in business?

In studying this unit students begin an understanding of
small business operations. Students are encouraged to become enterprising
citizens through understanding how to work together to create a product for
a specific target audience. The unit involves a design, make and appraise
element, helping students understand how they can produce items that can be
value-added to become successful entrepreneurs. The unit involves students
as risk-takers, communicators, team players and system creators. Students
begin an understanding of how they can join the enterprising world.
Key Assessment Task:
Follow
a process that will lead to developing, marketing and launching a new
product in the marketplace.

Natural World - How
can we create a sustainable future?
Revised in 2006
In this unit students investigate key sources of energy used
by mankind, explore sustainable uses of the earth’s renewable and
non-renewable energy sources and investigate a renewable energy source.
Through this study students will appreciate that the earth’s resources are
delicate and finite. The unit encourages students to develop skills of
investigation, teamwork, persuasive writing, oral communication and artistic
expression. Students are encouraged to take stewardship over their future
and their own uses of the earth’s resources and seek practical outlets to
preserve the Earth’s eco-balance including recycling and alternative energy
sources.
Key Assessment Tasks:

Write a persuasive
letter to an influential member of the community seeking their support in
promoting sustainable practices.

Design a hands-on
“lesson” of between 20-40 minutes on either sustainable or non-sustainable
uses of energy.

Use the visual arts
elements of line, shape, colour and texture to create a personal artistic
statement that expresses your perception of our society’s attitude to
recycling and reusing the earth’s resources.

United World - How do our Pacific Island neighbours live in a changing world?
Students explore the people and
environment of the South Pacific Islands. They will identify the
Island’s geographic features, and the unique culture of the Islands’
peoples. The unit encourages
the development of cultural understanding, allowing students insight into
the way different cultures live and the cultural beliefs and practices
that sustain a way of life with long traditions and a proud heritage.
In studying the unit students investigate the effects of
colonisation on the peoples of the Pacific Islands and the way that the
Islands’ people are adapting to a rapidly changing world.
Within the unit, the difficulties and pressures that interaction
with the outside world brings will be explored.
The unit involves students as researchers, historians, team
workers, empathisers, listeners and speakers as they explore the
fascinating life of people in the Pacific Islands.

Amazing World - How do we move around?
Students are encouraged to begin
unravelling the secrets of our awesome physical universe.
During the course students explore and experiment with some of
Newton’s Laws, investigate pushes, pulls and collisions, compare
balanced and unbalanced forces and uncover secrets of space flight.
Students are involved as storyboard and scriptwriters as they work
towards the creation of an animated film, focused on explaining the
mysterious world of space travel. During
the unit, students are also involved as investigators and creators of a
CD-Rom of information regarding the physical sciences.
An exam aims to test students’ broad knowledge of scientific
concepts covered during the term. The
unit involves students as scientists, filmmakers, researchers, team
players and communicators as they seek to unlock the secrets of how we
access space by using our knowledge of the physical universe.
Key Assessment Tasks:
- Write a script and storyboard in groups, for a short
film dealing with the study of force and motion.
