Year 1 Students' Work I'm ready for a busy day

Units of Work Things we do at school What can parents do to help?

Units of Work
Chancellor State College has five Year 1 classes with approximately 120 students. Throughout the year we cover four Units of Excellence. They are:-

  Who Am I?

What's Life Like on the Farm

  What Should I Eat Today?

How would I survive on an island?

What ever happened to my security blanket? What was my first word? What was my favourite toy?

During the “Who Am I?” unit of work,  children will journey back in time to observe the changes that have occurred in their life so far. They will use various techniques to gather information about the milestones of their life, the people and places of significance now and in their past. They will also investigate how life was both similar and different for their parents and grandparents when they were growing up.

Cock-a-doodle-do and the day begins on the farm - or does it? Are farms what the books make them out to be? Do they all keep hens and ducks and have scare crows and a little red tractor?

During "What's life like on the farm?", children will investigate farms and how the people who run them, manage and care for the crops and animals that they keep. They will investigate why farms are important and what they provide to us each and every day.

After learning about healthy food choices and devising a kitchen Code of Conduct, the students don aprons to prepare a healthy food buffet in the “What Should I Eat Today?” unit.

This is an interesting and important unit through which children investigate their energy needs and how healthy living and good nutrition meet these needs.

Island HO! What is an island? What would we need to live there? Can it sustain everything that we need to live now and in the future?

During "How would I survive on an island?",  children will investigate what makes an island and what features make up an island. They will investigate the patterns in the environment that may affect the island such as day, night, seasons, tides etc. They will consider the implication of living in isolation on the island and give consideration to meeting their basic needs of living. The children will investigate the idea of island living by learning through investigation and play based learning.
