Chancellor's
Integrating Threads |
|
Early in the development of our Framework
(1999 – 2000) a close investigation of the concepts and understandings
that underpin the STRANDS of each of the areas of SOSE, Science and HPE
led us to observe a direct relationship between some of their
elements.
As a consequence, an explicit link was
make between several STRANDS of the same KEY LEARNING AREA. For example,
the connection between the concepts of force, energy and motion from the
STRAND of Energy & Change and the concepts of matter, change
and material use from the STRAND of Natural & Processed Materials
was recognised and ultimately made explicit by the combination of the two
STRANDS to create one of our framework organisers (Amazing World). |
|
Our
Natural World
These units investigate how the living
and non-living components of nature interact to form our diverse and
complex world. Students form a growing understanding of the way that
living things function and interact with the environment. Through this
understanding, students will identify how we can better manage the
resource that is our Natural World.
|
Our
Personal World
These units explore the ways in which
our personal identity, relationships, growth and development influence
our health. Students will discover that our Personal World has a number
of dimensions- physical, social, emotional, mental and spiritual - and
that our health is maintained and enhanced by our individual action and
the combined actions of our community.
|
|
Our
Changing World
These units involve students developing
an understanding of change and continuity in society from ancient to
modern times. There is a focus on issues related to citizenship,
government and people’s access to resources and power. Students learn
about people and their contributions to our world over time and the
impact of their ideas and actions on the dynamic interrelationships within
our Changing World.
|
Our
Amazing World
These units investigate the forces
which influence the motion, shape, behaviour and energy of all objects.
Students will discover the Amazing World of energy and force, and why it
is a point of fascination and intrigue. Students will recognise the
importance of developing more effective methods of harnessing and
controlling energy, and the social and environmental consequences of
choices made now.
|
|
Our
United World
These units focus on developing an
understanding of cultural diversity, the construction of cultural
identity and a sense of belonging. Students explore the
interactions of humans with their environment and the significance of
geographical location and sense of home. The concept of a
membership of the world community - the United World - is the key aspect
of these units.

The
strands that underpin our ‘World’ organisers are as follows:

Earth
& Beyond, Life & Living, Science & Society.
(KLA
BASE – Science)
|
Personal

Health
of Individuals & Communities, Enhancing Personal Development,
&
Concepts of Physical Activity.
(KLA
BASE – HPE)
|
|
Changing
World
Time,
Continuity and Change, Systems, Resources and Power.
(KLA

Energy
& Change, Natural & Processed Materials, Science & Society.
(KLA

Culture
& Identity, Place & Space.
(KLA

|
|
Each ‘World’ is underpinned by a
Preschool to Year 7 sequence of units that unpack, through classroom
investigation, the concepts of that ‘world’. Each unit of work has
been developed around the concepts of one particular STRAND of that ‘world’.
(STRAND-CENTRED
UNIT DEVELOPMENT)
Every effort is made to include in the
planning of each unit, all of the CORE LEARNING OUTCOMES of that STRAND.
On the occasions where this is not meaningfully achievable, every effort
has been taken to ensure that the integrity
of the STRAND Level Statement has been kept.
